What is the GRE?

GRE is the Graduate Records Examination, it is a test used by universities to determine whether you are the right fit for their school. The GRE examines your quantitative skills, analytical writing, verbal reasoning and critical thinking skills. The GRE test can be taken online as well as on paper. If you take the test online it follows a certain process, as you answer questions correctly the questions tend to get harder, but as you start getting questions wrong, the questions tend to get easier. The test lasts for three hours. In the analytical writing section of the test, you have to write two essays. For one of the essays you are provided with topics, you have to choose one and write about it. For the second essay, an argument will be provided and you will have to write about what you think is wrong with the argument. In the quantitative skills section of the test, the examiners test your basic math skills, they assess whether you are able to solve certain math problems or not. These math problems include material like algebra and geometry, in this section of the test they also provide you with data that you have to be able to analyze. In the verbal reasoning section, examiners assess your basic English skills, they assess your comprehension of readings and your use of proper vocabulary. They assess your sentence structures and whether you are able to understand the text that you are being evaluated on. Proper vocabulary is essential to pass this part of the exam. In the critical thinking section, the examiners provide you with a hypothetical situation, you have to assess that situation, find flaws, and potential ways to improve the situation. In order to analyze the situation you have to really understand it, you have to be able to make inferences. For the analytical part of the test, the lowest score that you can receive is 0.5 and the highest is 6. For the verbal reasoning part, the lowest score you can receive is 130 and the highest is 170. For the quantitative reasoning and verbal portion of the test, the lowest score that you can receive is 200 and the highest score that you can receive is 800. Remember, the higher your score the higher your chance of getting accepted into an Ivy League school. You are allowed to take the GRE test once every 21 days. If you are not happy with your score the first time you take your test, you can always take it again. However, in order to be successful, you need to prepare for the test accordingly.
