What is the GMAT?

The GMAT is the Graduate Management Admissions Test. This test is taken by individuals who want to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration. The score that you obtain on the GMAT is crucial in determining whether or not you will be able to pursue your education further at your dream school. Most graduate schools rely on the score that you receive on your GMAT to determine whether they will provide you with an offer to attend their school. Many schools around the world, especially in North America and the United Kingdom, use the GMAT for their selection process. The GMAT is highly competitive as more than 100,000 people take the exam every year. Thus, proper preparation for the exam is very important. The GMAT is a computer based standardized test. Since the test is done through a computer system it follows a certain process. As you answer questions correctly, the questions tend to get harder. But, when you start getting questions wrong, the questions tend to get easier. The test lasts for three hours. The GMAT evaluates your verbal, quantitative, analytical, reading and writing skills. The verbal part of the exam assesses your basic English skills and your ability to read critically and analyze different arguments, it also assesses your ability to fix sentence structures. The quantitative section evaluates your basic math skills, specifically algebra and geometry. It assesses your problems solving skills using math by testing you on word problems and providing you with data that you have to analyze sufficiently. The analytical section of the exam provides you with an argument and requires you to analyze that argument and provide the reasoning behind the given argument. This section also tests your ability to analyze data. In this section, the basic element that you are being tested on is your ability to communicate your ideas and thoughts clearly and effectively. The test is three hours long, however, the three hours are usually allotted to different sections. For example, an individual might be given 25-30 minutes for the analytical section. Most of the test is in a multiple choice format except for the analytical writing part which is written in an essay format. The GMAT scores range from 200 to 800. Meaning that the lowest score that you can get is 200. The median score ranges from 650 to 700, and the highest is 800. The higher the score, the higher your chances of getting into a good Ivy league school like Harvard or Stanford. However, do not worry if you were not able to get the score that you wanted in your first try, an individual is permitted to take the test up to five times a year.
