What is a statement of purpose?

A Statement of Purpose (SOP) is one of the most important parts of your application. It will inform the admissions committee about who you are, your academic objectives,  your professional interests and ambitions, your future plans, what influenced your career path and whether you are a good match for the program to which you are applying. The purpose of an SOP is to provide you with an opportunity to directly communicate with your admissions committee. A good SOP will help you stand out among similarly qualified candidates and it will improve your chances of getting into the school of your choice; it may even compensate for weaker portions of your applications. A successful SOP should help you stand out and convince the body on the selection committee that you have remarkable achievements and that you belong in their program.

How long does a statement of purpose have to be?

A statement of purpose should be 1-2 pages depending on the school that you are applying for. It should have normal margins, the font should be 11 or 12, and using Times New Roman is generally a good idea. Do not write 3000 words into two pages with no space or indentation. If you structure your text into paragraphs with subheadings, it will make your application easier to read. A short statement of purpose that is skillfully written is usually better than a longer one that is not so well crafted. However, there is no harm in writing a longer SOP as long as it is between the 1 to 2 pages mark. You should include the name of the program you are applying for as well as your full name at the top of each page of your statement of purpose.

How to structure a statement of purpose?

In your statement of purpose you should start off by introducing yourself (who you are, what motivates you, your interests), and try to have a catchy opening line. Then, talk about your academic achievements, your career path, why your academic and professional achievements are relevant to the school you’re applying to (quality vs quantity). Lastly, talk about why you are applying to the specific school, and your field of interest. End your statement of purpose with something positive like why you enjoy your specific field so much, or talk about how you are looking forward to attending the university.

Why is your statement of purpose important?

A statement of purpose is your chance to showcase your personality, but don’t be afraid to talk about the impact you have made in your community or how you are helping the society at large.  The Admissions Committee wants to see dedication and consciousness, they want candidates who have clear goals and ambitions. Your statement of purpose gives you a chance to showcase yourself in a unique way so remember to use it to your advantage!

How is your statement of purpose used by universities?

Your statement of purpose is used by universities so they can distinguish you from the other thousands of applications that they have received. They use your statement of purpose to understand you better, to understand your ambitions, and whether you would be a good fit for their school. Many people might have the same high grades as you, but what might set you apart from the rest will be your statement of purpose. A statement of purpose allows universities to humanize you and recognize what sets you apart from the rest of the applications they have received. Through your statement of purpose, they understand what type of person you are and the achievements and the strides you have made in your community, or even globally. Your statement of purpose also helps universities understand the progressyou have made in your particular academic and professional field.

How do you write a statement of purpose?

You should try to start your statement of purpose with a catchy opening line. Self analyze, don’t just say you love your field, but explain why you love it and want to pursue it further. Let your passion seep through the words. Use creative language. But remember to be yourself, don’t make up stories about things you have not done. Be creative, but within limit. Do not write a poem or include pictures in your statement of purpose. Some general things that you should follow when writing your statement of purpose are that you should understand your audience (you should know which school you are applying to and what their specific requirements are), you should show interest in the school that you are applying to, if you are applying to more than one school remember to modify your applications effectively. You should be clear about the information you are trying to get across to the school that you are applying to. Most of all, remember to rewrite. It is likely that you will have to rewrite your statement of purpose many times before you write the perfect one! Also, remember to check your statement of purpose for any grammatical or syntax errors.

What should you not include in your statement of purpose?

Do not include irrelevant information. You may have a lot of experience in your particular field but pick and choose the experience that is most relevant to the program that you are applying for. Remember it is always better to have quality content over a large quantity.
